Yard Sign Design

In Digital Media, I designed a yard sign for the Satellite Center Team Members, Facilitators, and Faculty Members. This was my first assignment, and it was very different from what I expected.

The first thing we did was take notes on what the client wanted. This was quite easy and very helpful. Especially since the client came to provide feedback to our designs.

One of the hardest things was sketching out thumbnails for my ideas. I've always been more of a sketch, don't like it, leave it person. Even coming up with only 4 different sketches was a challenge. When I have my mind set on an idea, I go for it. I don't want to sketch something else. But I at least had 4 sketches for this process. I hope I can build a better tolerance for what I believe to be redundant.

Here are a few of the ideas that I liked. It's hard to tell what's going on, but it gets better when refined.

This was my first time using Adobe Illustrator. Although I had previously used Adobe Photoshop on multiple occasions, it was still somewhat hard to navigate.

(Im really bad at using drag pads on laptops.)

By the end, I had 8 iterations, each with 3 different types of people at the Satellite Center.

It was a long, and hard process. At first it was very cluttered, which is probably why simplicity and symmetry became the main aspects of my design.

I learned to make a gradient in the background and to gradient the silhouettes.

These are my final designs. I feel like this met the client's expectations because it has everything the client asked for. I also feel I pushed my skills and learned more about design.

I feel that with my new skills I can probably create a background for a digital illustration. I also feel that I can understand to put more time into the process. Sometimes more time can lead to better results.

This was only my first Digital Media project. Although I had a rocky start, it excites me for what's ahead.
