In Digital Media, we were given a skull template to design a mask out of. This was a fun project to do in between working for clients. It also gave us time to experiment with Adobe Illustrator. This was the template we used. ⬇ ⬇ ⬇
When I saw the template something told me to draw teeth. I'm not the best at drawing teeth, so I thought it'd be good practice.
My process went something like this. I used many layers and added new lines with the pen tool for each part. I actually discovered that if you have nothing selected, and you do a gaussian blur, you can blur your brush. This helped me achieve smoother gradients on the whole piece. I went back and forth between building values in the teeth with my blurry brush. ⬆ ⬆ ⬆
Upon seeing the completed teeth, I wondered what would fit in the rest of the empty skull. I decided to draw a brain. I enjoy drawing gore and thought it would fit with the contours of the mask.
I started by blocking out the shape of the brain, following my reference and avoiding the streaks in the mask. I followed the same process as I did for the teeth, building values with my blurry brush until I was satisfied. Finally I added a blue background, to complement the pink gums and yellow brain. ⬆ ⬆ ⬆ I added some purple shading to the background and it was done!
Finally, It was time to cut out. I used an exacto blade to do this. While with my Dyspraxia, motor skills are commonly a struggle, I feel I did very well.
Mr. Growl and I did an extensive photoshoot.

Overall, I am very proud with how this turned out. I completed it in a timely manner, and I created something good looking that I enjoyed making in the process.
